Notes
Frontispiece from Prince Baysunghur's Anthology of Wise Sayings. The golden calligraphy at the heart of this elaborate composition describes the main text to follow, a collection of "fine and rare phrases" and "pearls and jewels of ideas", compiled on the orders of Timurid prince Baysunghur (d. 1433), a celebrated book-lover and art patron. Unfortunately the first two pages (CBL Per 120.1 and Per 120.2) are all that now remains. Detached folio, pigments and gold on gold-flecked paper, re-mounted later, Arabic text in thuluth and kufic scripts, ogival medallion with cartouche below, framed within illuminated borders, one half of a double-page composition, frontispiece from an otherwise lost manuscript dedicated to Timurid prince Baysunghur, Herat, Afghanistan, c. 1430.
