Notes	Shīrīn visits the sculptor Farhād as he works, from the Five Poems (Khamsa) by Niẓāmī (d. 1209). The Armenian princess Shirin hired the great engineer Farhad to carve a channel through the mountains, to bring the milk from her herds directly to her new palace. Having completed this incredible task, Farhad also carved an image of the beautiful princess into the purple rockface: he had fallen deeply in love with Shirin. Sadly for Farhad, Shirin was devoted only to king Khusrau of Iran. In this moment, the princess visits Farhad as he works. He pauses his carving and gratefully accepts the drink she offers him. The rock carving painted here is based on a real monumental relief from Taq-e Bustan in Iran, built for the pre-Islamic Sasanian king Khusrau II (r. 590-628). Folio, ink, colours and gold on paper, Persian text in nasta`liq script, with painting and illuminated caption (on recto), from the Five Poems (Khamsa) by Niẓāmī (d. 1209), text copied by Murshid (signed colophon in codex, Per 162 fol. 381r), painting unsigned, Shiraz, Iran, dated 886H, 1481-82.
