Notes Miniature Qur'an. Very small format Qur'ans are easily carried, and have long been used to provide personal protection to their owners in times of need, such as war or sickness. This small codex measures 9.6 x 5.9 cm, with thirteen clearly-written lines per page. Two notes have been added by later owners, recording the birth of sons, in the years 1011 and 1022: was this Qur'an kept close during childbirth? Codex, ink, colour and gold on parchment, 21 folios, Arabic text in kufic script, partial text of juz' 29 of the Qur'an (sura 71:3 to 99:98), with later notes added (to the inner covers) recording the birth of a son in 1011 (4 Jumada 402H), and again in 1022 (16 Shawwal 413H), possibly Iraq, undated, c. 800-900.
