Notes Papyrus accounts of the cloth merchant. Folio fragment, ink on medium brown papyrus, mounted on paper and framed under glass, original cutting lines preserved on the right and lower edges (recto) with some text loss at top and left, Arabic text, written in medium thick pen perpendicular to the fibres (on recto) and parallel to the fibres (on verso), accounting sheet for a cloth merchant business, recording separate accounts (min al-ḥisāba), each with columns for (1:) lists of personal names, including identifiable Christian Egyptian (Coptic) and ethnic or professional nisba surnames, (2:) textile goods reckoned in robes, cloth and bales, and (3:) prices in dinars, qīrāṭs and fractions of ‘current’ coins (jawāz), or purses, unsigned, Egypt, undated, c. 800-900.
