Notes In the 19th century and for the first half of the 20th century political migration streamed from Italy to North Africa. Supporters of Italian unification, and especially the supporters of Republican nationalist ideologue Giuseppe Mazzini, were among the first migrants. After the Italian unification, some anarchists migrated, while under Fascism several antifascists took refuge in North Africa.
