Notes In Italy, the first law that introduced some forms of protection for female workers was approved in 1902 (l. 242/1902). It limited the working hours for women to 12 hours a day and introduced a one-month maternity leave after delivery. When this letter was written, there was a discussion in the country on the possible regulation of the working conditions of women and children. The Prefect of Cosenza reported that there were factories in which women and children worked from 4:30 in the morning to 10:30 at night.
