Notes
In this document the assessor of the Booty Tribunal of Palermo explains that the magistrate has declared the booty captured by the captain corsair Domenico Pantò e Trifone Citarrella to be legitimate; they had plundered a Turkish boat and captured 25 Turks from the Barbary Coast. Upon request of the ship-owner, the assessor has been charged to appraise the value of the captives, so that they could be sold at auction. The captives included an entire family of “Barbary Turks”, composed of Salem, “husband” (60 years old, valued at 60 piastres), Cadduccia, “mother” (48 years old, 80 piastres), Agmet, “brother” (24 years old, 80 piastes), Lima, a 21 year old widow with her 2 year old son Ali, together valued at 100 piastres, and a 14 year old black servant called Fatuma, valued at only 20 piastres. Seven of the other captives were sailors, aged from 23 to 60 years old and valued a price ranging from 25 to 50 piastres, and two were passengers, whose commercial value was estimated at between 30 and 40 piastres.
