Actor-based systems consist of autonomous elements called actors that work simultaneously and communicate with each other asynchronously. Due to asynchronous communication, the order of messages shared between actors may differ. As with other concurrently running systems, the lack of determinism makes testing and debugging difficult in actor-based systems. Traditional test coverage criteria are also not effective for these systems. In this paper, test coverage criteria that can be used for actor-based systems are examined. In addition to the existing criteria proposed in the literature, new criteria and applications of recently published studies in the field of discrete mathematics to determine and evaluate test coverage criteria for actor-based systems are discussed for the first time in this paper. A test infrastructure that can evaluate according to the recommended coverage criteria and automatically create test cases to meet these criteria is currently under development. Actor-based systems are composed of autonomous entities called actors that work concurrently and communicate with each other asynchronously. The ordering of messages exchanged among actors can vary due to asynchronous communication. Lack of determinism, as it is also the case for other concurrent systems, makes it harder to test and debug actor-based systems. Traditional test coverage criteria are not effective for these systems. In this paper, we elaborate on testing coverage metrics and criteria for actor-based systems. We review the existing metrics in the literature and propose new metrics. In addition, we discuss, for the first time in this paper, application of recent studies in the discrete mathematics domain on evaluating test coverage criteria for actor based systems. A testing framework that can evaluate these criteria and that can
automatically generate test cases to satisfy them is currently under development.
