Notlar Earrings, in a wide variety of designs, were worn by women throughout the Islamic world. These were described as ‘Modern Egyptian’ when they were acquired by the Museum in 1873, and their hollow pendants with three vertical bars are characteristic of that country. In more recent times the use of this pattern was only found among the women of the remote western oases, such as Bahariya, but it is quite credible that they were worn over a wider area in the 19th century.
