Woven linen with silk decorative bands. Egypt, Manshiya, Fatimid, ca. AD1000-1200. Tiraz. The linen is a tabby weave; undyed; approx. 22x18 tpc; z-spun; tread dia. between 0.5 mm and 1mm. One edge is selvedge. The linen cloth has four bands of decoration. At the top is a single line of scrolling characters in red and light blue silk (hook-like) with a light blue line on either side. Further down the piece is thicker row of connected oval shape s(red and yellow) between lines of light blue scrolling s-shapes and thin red lines. Next is a single line of similar oval shapes in light blue and yellow, with red outlines. Below this is a repeat of the thicker line. The piece is torn and has some holes and is stained. In the Abbasid period (AD750-1258) fabrics, called tiraz, were made in present day Iraq and Egypt. The word came to mean honorific robes with woven or embroidered inscriptions. Text from the Koran was embroided across the fabric with a line of geometric shapes above that were probably for decoration. Text might also include information such as the name of the reigning caliph, place of production and date.
