Fragment of a linen cloth, with a roundel (65mm dia.), tapestry-woven in purple wool and undyed linen (approx. 30x26 tpc; differing thread dia). Egyptian, ca. AD300-500. At the centre is a lion within a circle. At either side of the circle are leaves coming off long stems. The side decorations are not symmetrical. The piece has a number of holes and is stained.

Tapestry woven roundel in purple wool and undyed linen thread, from a tunic. A large area of the surrounding plain woven linen ground fabric remains. The slit-tapestry woven decoration depicts a medallion enclosing a lion facing left, on a false hatched background. At either side of the medallion are three vine leaves coming from straight stems. Details are picked out in flying thread brocading in undyed linen thread.
