ملاحظات Shelfmark: Ann Arbor, University of Michigan, Special Collections Research Center Isl. Ms. 622 | Origin: Lacks dated colophon ; ownership statement in name of Muḥammad Saʻīd ibn ʻAlī al-Asadī provides a terminus ante quem of 1133 [1720 or 21] ; paper, hand, etc. would suggest mid to late 16th century. | Accompanying materials: a. Inventory cataloguing slip in hand of Winifred Smeaton Thomas. -- b. Acquisitions slip from Yahuda. | Former shelfmark: From inner front cover and spine label, "IL 180" (likely supplied by Yahuda, see acquisitions slip). | Binding: Pasteboards covered in brown leather ; Type II binding (with flap) ; board linings in yellow laid paper ; upper and lower covers carry stamped mandorla (filled with vegetal composition) and pendants (with recessed onlays) as well as tooled floral accents and rule border ; sewning gone, traces of two sewing stations, most bifolia now split ; overall in somewhat poor condition with significant abrasion, staining, lifting and losses of leather, etc. ; serves as wrapper for the gatherings, perhaps never attached to text block though sized fairly well. | Support: European laid paper of a few different types ; opening type with 9 laid lines per cm. (vertical), chain lines spaced 28-29 mm. apart (horizontal), anchor (two line) in circle with six-pointed star above watermark (roughly 62 mm. tall, see p.66, 75, etc.), and possibly "AP" countermark (see p.111, etc.), sturdy and well-burnished ; another type with 11 laid lines per cm. (vertical), chain lines spaced 24 mm. apart (horizontal), font with lid and cross (or cardinal's mitre / chapeau) watermark (see p.190, 191, 228, 233, etc. and compare Velkov Chapeau nos.1-8 and Nikolaev nos. 31-32) and "CC" under trefoil countermark (see p.250, etc.) ; final flyleaf with 7 laid lines per cm. (horizontal), chain lines spaced 29 mm. apart (vertical), and three crescents watermark (85 mm. long, perpendicular to chains). | Decoration: Keywords and abbreviation symbols rubricated ; textual dividers in the form of inverted commas in red. | Script: Naskh ; spacious, elegant and idiosyncratic Turkish or 'Syrian' [?] hand in a narrow line ; virtually serifless and quite rounded with thickening and elongation of many descenders and horizontal strokes, occasional inclination to the right or left, pointing in distinct dots, point of final nūn set deep and nearly fully encircled by bowl, final yāʼ and alif maqṣūrah mainly mardūdah ; hand changes at p.401, also quite elegant, fluid and rounded with bowl of final nūn fully encircling dot. | Layout: Written in 19 lines per page ; frame-ruled (impression of ruling board evident). | Collation: 24 V(240), VI (252), i ; almost exclusively quinions (though most bifolia now split) ; catchwords present ; foliation in brown ink, Hindu-Arabic numerals ; pagination in pencil, Western numerals, supplied during digitization. | Title from inscription on interior of upper cover. | Ms. codex. | Fine copy of the commentary on the Alfīyah by Ibn Mālik (Muḥammad ibn ʻAbd Allāh, d.1273) by his son, Badr al-Dīn Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad (d.1287), on grammar. | more | less
