Listed as item number: 73, Folios 18v-19r and case of MS 19620, Book: H16.5 x W11.3cm; Case: H18 x W15cm - This remarkable book, which was produced in Muslim West Africa and probably dates from the nineteenth century, is a copy of Muḥammad al-Jazūlī’s popular devotional text, the Dalā'il al-Khayrāt (see Fig 72). Typically for books of this region of Africa, the manuscript is composed of loose folios enveloped in a leather cover to which is attached a strap that terminates in a seashell; this cover is itself provided with a handsome leather case decorated with woven strapwork. The Arabic text is written in a variant of maghribī, and is in black with red rubrications. Decorating several of the pages are simple but attractive geometric designs rendered in black, red, and brown ink (Text by Ünver Rüstem, from the exhibition catalogue: Objects of instruction : treasures of the School of Oriental and African Studies, Anna Contadini, Editor. London : SOAS, University of London, 2007.) ( en )
