Treatise on uṣūl al-fiqh. | Ms. codex., Title from title page (fol. 1a)., Incipit: الحمد لله ذى العزّة و [---] والرحمة والافضال والصلاة على رسوله ... قال الشيخ الامام علآ ال[---] النظر ابو بكر محمد بن احمد السمرقندى متّعه الله من علمه ان [---] ول الفقه والاحكام فرع لعلم اصول الكلام, 21 lines per page. Written in medium large naskh in black ink faded to brown, with some use of red. Thick cream paper with laid and chain lines visible. Quinions. Marginal annotations by several hands. Two spine labels with inscriptions reading respectively "Kitāb Mīzān al-uṣūl fī natāʼij al-ʻuqūl" in Arabic script and "10[3]" in Western and Arabic numerals. The two first leaves are damaged with loss of text. Ink faded with some loss of text due to humidity damage up to fol. 69 and on last folios., Collation: Paper, fol. i, 209, i ; i (later added free endpaper), 1¹⁰ (-1, before fol. 1) 2-21¹⁰, i (later added free endpaper) ; the quires are numbered using Arabic ordinals in the form "thānī" (see fol. 10a) ; signs to mark the middle of the quire (see fol. 15a) ; foliation in black ink using Arabic numerals (note the characteristic 5)., Copy completed on Yawm al-Khamīs middle of Dhū al-Qaʻdah 624 [Oct. 26, 1227] by ʻAbd al-Qāhir ibn Aḥmad [ibn] Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥasan ibn al-Ṭabīb al-Ḥanafī (colophon, fol. 209a). The text has been collated on a copy in the hand of Raḍī al-Dīn Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad al-Ṭūsānī(?) al-...(?), known as al-Muḥīṭ, in the first ten days of Dhū al-Ḥijjah 624 [Nov. 1227] (collation statement on the margin of the colophon, fol. 209a). | Brown leather over paper pasteboards for upper and lower covers, fore-edge flap and envelope flap. Yellow paper pasted on covers and envelope-flap. The fore-edge flap has a border consisting of fillets and impressions of a eight petals flower pattern stamp. Rebacked. paper pastedowns and free endpaper. | Several ownership statements and seal in red ink reading "British Museum" on fol. 1a and 209b.
