Ms. 961 Origin: As appears in colophon on p.62, copied by Muṣṭafá Ibrāhīm, khādim al-Ustādh al-Khalwatī, from a copy held in the Khedival Library (al-Kutubkhānah al-Khidīwīyah / الكتبخانة الخديوية ) in Darb al-Jamāmīz palace ( سراى درب الجماميز ) with transcription completed 23 Shaʻbān 1294 [ca. 2 September 1877]. Former shelfmark: Mich. Isl. Ms. temp. no. 110 Binding: Boards covered in black cloth ; Western style binding ; pastedowns and flyleaves printed in a geometric design resembling a scale pattern in dark maroon ; cover gold stamped "فيصل التفرقة" ; pulled by conservation such that cover / case and sewing threads are housed in one envelope and text pages in two others (five leaves per slide / folder, three slides per envelope) with all envelopes in one larger envelope. Support: Brown machine wove paper, extremely brittle. Decoration: Keywords rubricated. Script: Naskh ; elegant Ottoman hand in a medium line ; mainly serifless with effect of tilt to the left, curvilinear descenders, pointing in distinct dots, final yāʼ often unpointed. Layout: Written in 17 lines per page ; frame-ruled. Collation: i, 3 V(30), i (originally), exclusively quinions ; now pulled / disbound with conjugate leaves divided ; catchwords present ; pagination in pencil, Western numerals, supplied during digitization (includes front flyleaf). Colophon: "Scribal," reads "وكان الفراغ من كتابة هذه النسخة النفيسة يوم السبت الموافق ثلاثة وعشرون من [شعبان] سنة اربعة وتسعون ومائتان [كذا] بعد الالف من هجرة سيد المرسلين على يد كاتبها الفقير مصطفى ابراهيم خادم الاستاذ الخلوتي واغفر اللهم لكاتبها ولقارئها ولسامعها ولكافة المسلمين اجمعين امين وهذه النسخة منقولة من نخسة موجودة بالكتبخانة الخديوية بمصر المحروسة بسراى درب الجماميز" Explicit: "وعلى القانون الذي ينبغي ان يتبع فيها فاقنع به والسلام" Incipit: "قال الامام ابو حامد محمد بن محمد بن محمد الغزالي رحمه الله احمد الله تعالى استسلاما لعزته واستتماما لنعمته واستغناما ما لتوفيقه وطاعته ... اما بعد فاني رأيتك ايها الاخ الشفيق والصديق المتعصب موعور الصدر منقسم الفكر لما قرع سمعك من طائفة من الحسدة على بعض كتبنا المصنفة في اسرار معاملات الدين وزعمهم ..." Fine copy of al-Ghazālī's (d.1111) concise treatise of dogmatic theology, partly directed against the Bāṭinīyah (i.e. the Ismāʻīlīs), but primarily a defense of his own views on taʼwīl, and on tawātur and ijmāʻ as sources of religious knowledge (see Watt, "al-G̲H̲azālī" in EI2).
