About: Clear copy of a commentary on the preface of the Mukhtaṣar, the renowned compendium of Mālikī law by Khalīl ibn Isḥāq al-Mālikī, Ibn al-Jundī (d.1365 or 1374?). | Shelfmark: Ann Arbor, University of Michigan, Special Collections Research Center, Isl. Ms. 581
Origin: As appears in colophon, pp.25-26, transcription completed 25 Ramaḍān 1097 [ca. 15 August 1686].
Accompanying materials: a. Inventory cataloguing slip in hand of Winifred Smeaton Thomas (pp.1-2) -- b. Acquisitions slip from Yahuda (pp.3-4).
Former shelfmark: From front cover, 'title page' (p.5) and label on lower cover, "IL 193" (likely supplied by Yahuda, see acquisitions slip).
Binding: Wove paper cover (light brown, single sheet, crisp and transluscent, limp binding without boards) ; sewn in light blue thread, four stations ; cover ill-fitting and in somewhat poor condition with tears, staining, etc.
Support: European laid paper with 9 laid lines per cm. (vertical), chain lines spaced 22-24 mm. apart (horizontal), and crown-star-crescent watermark (roughly 85 mm. tall, see p.16, 17, etc.) ; dark cream in color, sturdy, well-burnished to glossy.
Decoration: Keywords, abbreviation symbols, and text being commented upon rubricated ; textual dividers in the form of inverted commas in red.
Script: Naskh ; angular Egyptian or 'Syrian' hand ; partially seriffed with right-sloping head-serif appearing occasionally on free-standing alif, slight effect of tilt to left and of words descending to baseline, many rectilinear descenders, pointing in distinct dots, elongation of horizontal strokes, kāf mashqūqah preferred, final nūn quite round with dot set deep in bowl, somewhat freely ligatured.
Layout: Written in 23 lines per page ; frame-ruled.
Collation: V+1 (11) ; catchwords present ; pagination in pencil, Western numerals, supplied during digitization (includes inserts).
Colophon: "Scribal," triangular, reads "وكان الفراغ من كتابة هذا الشرح المبارك يوم الخميس المبارك خامس عشرين شهر رمضان الكريم من سنة سبعة وتسعين والف من الهجرة النبوية على صاحبها افضل الصلاة وازكى السلام وعلى اله"
Explicit: "قيل فالاول اخص مطلقا وفيه نظر اذ لو سلمناه يمكن تصادقهما وانفراد كل منهما فيكون كل منهما اعم من الاخر من وجه والله سبحانه وتعالى اعلم بالصواب واليه المرجع والمآب ولا حول ولا قوة الا بالله العلي العظيم وصلى الله على سيدنا محمد النبي الامي وعلى اله واصحابه وعلى سائر الانبياء والمرسلين وعلى آل كل وصحب كل والتابعين لهم باحسان الى يوم الدين وسلم [؟] وسلام على المرسلين والحمد لله رب العالمين"
