About: Fragment from an early ʿAbbāsid Qur'ān carrying Sūrat al-Naḥl (16) final words of verse 11 through final words of verse 54 and final words of verse 76 through middle of verse 103 (16:11-54 ; 76-103). | Shelfmark: Ann Arbor, University of Michigan, Special Collections Research Center, Isl. Origin: Lacks dated colophon ; script and ornament would suggest 9th century.
Former shelfmark: Isl. Ms. 162
Support: Parchment ; significant losses due to fire, particularly in opening section (first 13 leaves).
Decoration: Illuminated roundels of Déroche style 2' A.II though with further perimeter in gold (incorporating dark green and red along with gold and black outline) mark ten verses (see p.30, 37, 45) ; illuminated hāʼ (abjad numeral 5) marks five verses (see p.33, 42).
Script: Kufic or Early ʻAbbāsid script of Déroche style D.I (see Déroche, The Abbasid tradition, p.36-37 and George, The Rise of Islamic calligraphy, p.91) ; short vowels provided in the form of red discs.
Layout: Written in 7 lines per page.
