ملاحظات
Under Sultan Mahmud II (ruled 1809-39) it became the custom for court artists to paint miniature portraits of the sultan for distribution as gifts, a tradition that continued under his successors. This miniature is of Mahmud's son Sultan Abdülaziz (ruled 1861-76) and was painted by the Ottoman Armenian artist Vichen Abdullah (1834-1900) after a photograph taken by his family's photographic studio, Abdullah Frères of Istanbul (for a print, see V&A: 2753-1934).
