A kalian is an oriental tobacco pipe with a long flexible tube connected to a container where the smoke is cooled by passing through water. They are also known as a hookah, huqqa, qalian, qalyan, qaliyan, narghile, shisha, and a hubble-bubble.

Kalian or base to a water pipe or hookah, coarse fritware, of globular form tapering at the top, pierced at the neck with a second smaller hole high on the shoulder, the neck framed with a band of applied six-petal rosettes (the mouth missing and reduced in height), covered in an opaque pale green slip.
