19th century carpet from Daghestan WARP: grey and white wool plied together; Z2S; 15 threads per inch (60 per dm). WEFT: white wool; Z2S; 2 shoots after each row of knots; 7 knots per inch (27 per dm). PILE: wool; 8 colours: red, yellow, green, blue, light blue, dark brown, brown, white; symmetrical knot tied around 2 warp threads; 52 knots per sq. inch (810 per sq. dm). SIDE FINISH: 2 cords overcast with white wool END FINISH: missing DESIGN: field: blue ground divided into a grid with a red line forming octagons joined by squares with swastikas. Each octagon contains an angular plant form. Main border: white ground with elaborate angular S-motifs in a variety of colours. Inner and outer borders: multiple diagonal stripes forming truncated zigzag.

NB main border, Franses & Pinner attribute to Shirvan A gift with four other rugs from Henry Bergen, 66 Sutton Court, Chiswick, W4. This "Cauycasian (Daghestan) on Form 9 described in note to Director as ".... a small Caucasian (Chichi) rug of poor quality but of possible practical use. You agreed we should accept these as a gift. Your signature Form 9, please". GWD. June 1949
