Woven linen and silk. Egyptian, Fatimid, ca. AD1000-1200. Tiraz. This fragment is probably from a corner of a scarf. The linen in undyed; approx. 25x21 tpc; loosely woven; thread dia. approx. 0.25-0.50mm. One side is selvedge and one edge is a fringe. The selvedge is formed with a vertical band (approx 10mm wide) of tightly woven, light blue silk. The fringe is approx. 20mm wide. Above that is a band (18mm wide) made of black, single threads woven alternately with undyed linen threads. At two points there are double linen threads to divide this band into thirds. Then there is a band (approx. 10mm wide) of undyed linen. Then there is a band (approx. 32mm wide) of tightly woven cream silk. It is edged either side with a small stripe of black silk. There is an area (approx. 105mm wide) of undyed linen (badly stained and with some holes) above this. Then a final band (approx. 28mm wide) of decoration. This decoration is of undyed linen on a black silk background. [The design is a black and white version to that seen on 246(A)-1890.] The central row is of oval shapes with a central geometric character in the middle. This row is bordered on either side with a row of scrolls. In the Abbasid period (AD750-1258) fabrics, called tiraz, were made in present day Iraq and Egypt. Text from the Koran was embroidered across the fabric with a line of geometric shapes above that were probably for decoration. The word came to mean honorific robes with woven or embroidered inscriptions. Text might also include information such as the name of the reigning caliph, place of production and date.
