The panel bears the name of the Mamluk Sultan Al-Malik Az-Zahir Sayf ad-Din Barquq (ruled 1382â1389 and 1390 â1399) who was the first Sultan of the Mamluk Burji dynasty. Barquq, who was of Circassian origin, came to rule twice during the late fourteenth century. Barquq is known to have sponsored the construction of the Madrasa-Khanqa of Sultan Barquq in Cairo; completed in 1386, it was a pious foundation designed to serve as both a khanqah and a madrasa. This wooden panel most likely adorned the minbar (religious stepped pulpit) that appeared in his Madrasa. The perforated edges of the panel indicate that it fit into another structure, one which most certainly included other elaborately carved wooden elements. Benedictory inscriptions of Sultanâs names often appear within panels of minbars. This panel allows for its date and presumed origin to be more precisely attributed.

Oblong shaped panel with a carved Arabic inscription written in the thuluth script stating, âGlory to be our Master the Sultan Melik-ed-Dahir Barqouq. May God grant his glorious aid.â The inscriptions appear within two polylobed horizontal cartouches, flanking a central roundel with the Mamluk insignia containing another inscription in the middle.
