ملاحظات
Fragments of woven linen and silk. Egyptian, Manshiya?, Fatimid, ca. AD1000-1200. Tiraz. Two bands of decoration remain. One (52mm wide) has a centre of guilloche/interlacing waves (yellow and black) on a background of blue, with centres of floral icons (red, black and undyed). This strip is bordered either side with strips of red background with circular icons in yellow and black. Small strip of blue with black wave-like lines are either side of this band. Linen separates this band from a smaller one (28mm wide). At the centre of this strip are small animal icons (rabbits and birds?), each in a circle of blue or yellow and on a background of red. This strip is bordered wither side with a small strip of yellow with black wave-like lines. These two bands have been sewn onto a backing of undyed, glazed linen, with a running stitch. The linen does not cover the back of the bands of decoration. The piece is in poor condition with many holes and some staining. Similar to 244-1890 and 245-1890. In the Abbasid period (AD750-1258) fabrics, called tiraz, were made in present day Iraq and Egypt. The word came to mean honorific robes with woven or embroidered inscriptions. Text from the Koran was embroidered across the fabric with a line of geometric shapes above that were probably for decoration. Text might also include information such as the name of the reigning caliph, place of production and date.
