At the end of the 18th century embroidery designs began to develop into rigid and heavily stylised borders for towels and napkins. The colours of 18th and 19th century embroideries were originally very bright but many have faded to pleasing pastel shades; often great quantities of metal thread were used. Napkins were mainly used to clean fingers during meals, but were also used as decoration and as covers. Their designs were consistently inventive.

Towel/Napkin, linen with bands of cotton weft embroidered with silk in musabak, double darning, double darning on the diagonal, double running in a line, and with metal thread embroidery in double darning on the diagonal. There are silk ends in each selvedge. There is a band of plainweave along either end, then a wider band of warp threads with no weft and then the plainweave continues. Above a fine line of scrolls are three horizontal floral sprays: each includes one large, downward-facing blossom in pinks or mauves, a spray of small pointed blue leaves or flowers, n smaller upward-facing blossom in pinks or mauves and a curving spray of small green and yellow or green and purple flowerheads.
