Earrings, in a wide variety of designs, were worn by women throughout the Islamic world. This example was bought for one shilling and sixpence at the International Exhibition, London, 1872. The crescent shape is typical of Islamic earrings. It was described as having the name halak when it was acquired, which is a generic Arabic name for earrings.

Hollow gilt metal crescent earring. The wire is attached to the crescent by a hinge at one end and a matching pin fastening at the other. The crescent has a sharp ridge on each side and five loops along the bottom edge. The four outer loops hold small comma-shaped sheet metal pendants, and the central loop has a blue glass bead on a wire. There is a mount on the body of the crescent, either side of the central loop, each of which contains a blue glass bead.
