ملاحظات
This pendant was described as a âbutton for the cloakâ when it was bought for the Museum at the International Exhibition, London, in 1872, for three shillings and six pence. The word zir simply means button in Arabic. Although the use of silver buttons was discouraged by Islamic tradition, which forbade men from wearing precious metals as ornament, the use of silver buttons in the Syrian region was clearly widespread in the 19th century, as several examples in the V&A collections demonstrate.
