One of the most significant objects within the Iraqi collection is this pair of fragmentary leaves from a wooden door, said to have come from Tikrit and datable stylistically to the 8th century (object nos. W.4 and 5-1933). The presence of a large cross carved into one of the door leaves indicates that the panels came from a Christian religious building. The town of Tikrit, 50 km north of Samarra, was the see of a Jacobite bishopric since the 4th century and an important centre of Christianity and Syriac scholarship). In the early centuries of Islamic rule, the town remained almost exclusively Christian, and the ruins of various Christian buildings are said to have survived above ground.
