ملاحظات This wooden panel would have been part of a larger calligraphic frieze adorning a religious building, such as a mosque or madrasa (school). The type of Arabic inscription, set against a loose foliate scrollwork, is also found on Ottoman tile work of the sixteenth century, such as an example currently at the V&A (429:1 to 7-1900). From 1517, Egypt was a part of the Ottoman Empire, and while this particular panel may not have come from an architectural structure or large furnishing in Cairo, the panel’s script, floral arrangement, and carving style strongly correspond with the arts produced under the Ottoman Empire during this time.
