Notlar Image: 23.4 x 20.8 cm.Mounted: 48.9 x 36.1 cm.Text is from Saʻdī's Kullīyāt and consists of 58 lines written in nastalīq script as a 2.6 cm. wide border. Two heading panels are superimposed on the illustration. The lines of text are separated by gilt spaces decorated with red, blue and yellow blossoms on a vine. The heading panels are geometric with either blue or gilt backgrounds with floral designs. Headings are in white ink. - Depicted is a garden scene with ten male figures and a horse. At lower right four men are seated on the grass. One is writing in a book; his pen case is open before him. The three others are conversing over an open book on the ground between them. Behind them to the left a black horse with a gold saddle paws at the water in a stream. Upper center shows five figures, one partially hidden by the trunk of a tree which grows next to a small pool. To the left one man kneels in front of a pavilion greeting a second man who walks toward him. The figure obscured by the tree sits on a carpet, a book open to his left. He is having a boot removed by the fourth figure, and they both are being observed by a fifth figure at the exreme right. A basket of fruit rests at the base of the tree. A blue cloak hangs over a branch. The entire scene is being observed by a figure leaning over an upper floor balcony of a pavilion in the upper left corner. Below the painting are drawings of two gazelles and a tree in gilt. Possibly from the Baghdad school about 1600. Bordered by band of text in Persian. The text consists of an introduction in Arabic to Saʻdī's book of humorous stories and the first lines of poetry which follow.
