Notlar Image size: 16.2 x 9 cm.Paper: European laid paper likely dating from 1750-1850. - Two images depicting the famous Turkish shadow puppets, Karagöz (right) and Hacivat (left), probably dating from the late 19th century. Karagöz has an elaborate turban, a rounded beard and generally heavier features. Hacivat has a pointed hat and beard. Both characters wear red and gilt coats with green pants. The backgrounds are black flecked with gold; both images are framed in gold. The painting was executed on top of Arabic text, as can be seen from the marginalia which are partially covered. On the verso are two pages from a manuscript on grammar in Arabic, probably dating from the late 18th to early 19th centuries. It is likely that the images and the text are not contemporary with one another.
