Four servants carry the chair aloft across two poles at the centre of the image. A parasol, lined with black material and covered in white covers her head. Only the pale skirts and feather-topped hat of the Viceroy’s wife are visible.In the background, along the top of a ridge and at left and right in the middle-ground, various structures are visible, probably warehouses and barracks.Inscriptions:Ink, above image at right: ‘Dec 26th 1898.’Ink, below image: ‘Being carried to the launch from the Residency, Aden.’Pencil, alongside image at right: ‘6’Temporal context:This and the photographs that accompany it were taken en route to India at the end of 1898 and during the first year of Lord Curzon’s position as Viceroy of India, 1899. | 1 b&w albumen print | Dimensions:118 x 167 mmCondition:The image is buckled and foxed along with the card it is mounted upon.
