Notlar	Qur'an scroll from Safavid Iran. Measuring over 6.7m in length, this paper scroll contains the entire text of the Qur'ān, written in a tiny script known as "ghubar" (dust). Also included - reserved against the tiny ghubar text - is a series of important prayers and invocations, addressed to the Prophet and his descendants through his daughter Fāṭima and her husband `Alī ibn Abī Ṭālib. Together, they head a family line of altogether Twelve Imāms, who are of deep spiritual significance in Shi`a Islamic tradition. For this Qur'ān scroll, the special praise for the Twelve Imams fits with the cultural environment of Safavid Iran, which from 1501 was a Twelver Shi`a state. Scroll, ink, gold and colours on paper, Arabic text in ghubar script, with illuminated heading, the full text of the Qur'ān, with additional pious texts reserved against main text (the bismillāh, invocations to the Prophet, his daughter Fāṭima and the twelve Imāms (the Fourteen Innocents, or Chahārdah Ma`ṣūm), the prayer Nād-e `Alīyan, and the name of Imām `Alī), signed Muẓaffar ibn `Abdullāh al-Ḥasanī al-Māzandarānī, possibly Shiraz, Iran, dated 986H, 1578-1579.
