Notlar Display label text from "Lie of the Land: the Secret Life of Maps", British Library, 2001-2002: 'Map of the Vale of Kashmir, c.1836'. Drawn, or at least supplied by Abdur Rahim from Bukhara (in modern Uzbekistan), this is perhaps the most striking of the early maps of Kashmir to survive. It was acquired by Captain Claude Wade in 1836, who referred - 'notwithstanding the rudeness of its construction' - to the 'extreme minuteness of its information'. South is at the top and an enlarged Srinagar (with its Shalimar Gardens) can be clearly seen on the Jhelum river, in the middle left. Other detail, all in Persian, is impressive, distinguishing culivated fields (light green), village groves (dark green) and bare earth (brown). Receipt of the map was much welcomed by the British officials, and an expensive copy commissioned 'on the European Model', because this provided the British with a cartographic glimpse 'beyond our frontiers'. Abdur Rahim. [Map of the Vale of Kashmir]. [c.1836]. Maps S.T.K., Presented to Captain Claud Wade by Abdul Rahim. In the possession of Dr Hugh Falconer, F.R.S., some time after 1845. Stamped Royal Geographical Society 13th April [18]91., Additionally endorsed: Panoramic view of Cashmere. In a L[ette]r from the Pol[itica]l Ag[en]t at Loodhiana d/4th July 1836., Persian inscription, English endorsements.
