Örnek Metin Closing folios from a Mamluk Qur'an. These two folios were the final page-opening of a monumental Qur'an made in Mamluk Cairo, possibly for Sultan al-Ashraf Sha`ban (r. 1363-76). A complex design of overlapping circles and white strapwork forms the framework for the final two sura titles (above), while the lower frame holds a separate quote ("And perfect are the words of your Lord..." Qur'an 6:115). In 1877, the French scholar Prisse d'Avennes published a colour drawing of a detail of this page-opening (fol. 2r, upper left) in his work on Arab art and design: he had seen the manuscript on display at the international exhibition in Paris, 1867. Other folios from this manuscript: CBL Is 1627, Boston Museum of Fine Arts 09.335, and Manchester John Rylands Ar.42 (the codex). Two folios, ink, colours and gold on paper, pasted to backboard, Arabic text in muhaqqaq and easteren kufic scripts, with illuminated backdrop, surrounding frame (chahar-lawh) and six marginal motifs, final two suras (113 al-Falaq, and 114 al-Nas) of the Qur'an, with Qur'an verse (6:115 al-An`am) quoted in the lower frame, unsigned, Cairo, Egypt, c. 1360-1380
