Örnek Metin Concluding History of the Ottoman Sultan Süleyman by Sayyid Luqmān. The Ottoman court historian (şahnameci) Sayyid Luqmān (or Seyyid Lokman) composed this versified account of Süleyman the Magnificent's last seven years of life, describing events in the capital Istanbul, the sultan's military campaigns in the Balkans, Austria, Hungary, on Malta, and on Chios, and concluding with the sultan's death and funeral in 1566. Luqmān was continuing the Ottoman dynastic chronicles established by his two immediate predecessors: Eflatun and before him the renowned court historian `Ārif. `Ārif composed the multi-volume Book of kings of the House of Osman (Shāhnāma-yi Āl-i Osmān): Luqmān’s work (CB T 413) carefully follows this work’s form in language and general layout. `Ārif also worked on two other important accounts of the Ottoman sultan: Mujmal al-Tumar (imperial scroll, 1584) and Hünername (begun 1577), which were completed by his two court successors. Codex, ink, gold and colours on paper, leather binding, 104 folios, Persian text in nasta`liq script, with illuminated shamsa (dedicated to Murad III, fol. 1r), title heading (sarlawh, fol. 1v), section headings and interlinear illumination (throughout), and 14 paintings (fols. 7r, 10r, 22v-23r, 46r, 70r, 71v, 78r, 80r, 93v-94r, 115v, 119r, 121r), Supplement to the Account of Sultan Süleyman (Tatimma-yi aḥwāl-i shāhinshāh-i khuld-āshiyān Sulṭān Sulaymān Khān), account of the reign of Ottoman sultan Süleyman the Magnificent in the final years 1559-1566, composed by court historian Sayyid Luqmān ibn Sayyid Ḥusayn al-`Āshūrī al-Ḥusaynī al-Urmavī, commissioned for Ottoman sultan Murad III (r. 1574-1595), text copied by Qāsim al-Ḥusaynī al-`Arīdī al-Qazvīnī (colophon, fol. 122r), Istanbul, Turkey, dated 987H, 1579. A further 18 folios, detached from this codex, are also in the Chester Beatty collection (fols. 5, 12, 14, 28, 33, 38, 55, 56, 60, 64, 65, 82, 95, 101, 113, 114, 116, 117). During a phase of rebinding (date unknown), the following 8 folios were moved out of their original correct text sequence: fol. 15 (moved to position of fol. 11), 16 (moved to 13), 11 (moved to 15), 13 (moved to 16), 26 (moved to 24), 27 (moved to 25), 24 (moved to 26), 25 (moved to 27).
