Örnek Metin Forty Sayings of the Prophet (Chehel Hadith-i Rasul) by Mir `Ali Shir Nava'i. This beautiful book was copied out in Samarqand by the celebrated calligrapher, Mir `Ali Haravi (meaning from Herat). As well as the exquisite small format calligraphy employed here, Mir `Ali also produced larger scale single-folio "display pieces" (collected in Mughal albums, such as the "Minto Album" folios, CB In 07A), and designs for monumental inscriptions in architectural tilework (for example, at the shrine of Imam Reza in Mashhad). When the political landscape changed with the fall of the Timurid dynasty, Mir `Ali was reportedly conscripted to the court of `Abd al-`Aziz Khan in Bukhara, where he eventually ended his days. Codex, ink, colours and gold on paper, 10 folios, Arabic text, Chaghatay Turkish translation and verse commentary in nasta`liq script, illuminated sarlawh (fol. 1v), gold-flecked borders throughout, Forty Sayings of the Prophet Muhammad (Chehel Hadith-i Rasul) composed after the poet Jami's Persian version by contemporary Timurid statesman Mir `Ali Shir Nava'i, signed (fol.10r) by Mir `Ali al-Katib al-Sultani, Samarkand, Uzbekistan, dated 930H, 1524.
