Notlar The boat depicted by Yahya al-Wasiti in this AH 7th / AD 13th-century miniature, illustrating the "Maqamat" of al-Hariri, is a richly ornamented boat rowed by three men standing aft. The story it illustrates mentions that it was used on the river Euphrates. The fact that three oarsmen were needed suggests that it may have been rowed upstream, as well as carrying several passengers and perhaps cargo. In AH 1444 - 1445 / AD 2023-24, artist Rashad Salim and the Safina Projects team studied this image in detail in preparation to reconstruct the historic boat. This was an unusual challenge, as the image is not proportionate. The study process included creating artist’s impressions and technical drawings, scale modelling by three different modelmakers experienced in different kinds of boatbuilding, and experimentation with rowing methods to understand how this boat worked and to calculate its proportions before the first prototype Abbasid Jendoul reconstruction was built in AH 1444 - 1445 / 2024-25.
Örnek Metin Acquired from the estate of collector Charles Schefer in 1899. — Colophon in the manuscript provides the name of the artist and date of completion. — Similarity with other Baghdadi manuscripts, and the appearance of the name of the Abbasid Caliph al-Mustansir in one of the paintings (AH 8th / 15th maqama, fol. 164v).
