Notlar Despite the steady advance of western-style artworks, traditional Ottoman arts and crafts did not disappear entirely. This hilye or word portrait of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) has been rendered on tripartite, foldable cardboard, decorated on the outside with elaborate ebru paper marbling. Its composition follows a layout current since the 11th/17th century when it was devised by the famous Ottoman calligrapher Hafiz Osman (1052-1110 H/1642-1698CE). Traditionally, the hilye presents Hadith recounting the noble physical and spiritual attributes of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), often embellished with rich illumination. A large oval cartouche, with the hadith in black naskhi, appears in the centre, surrounded by four roundels naming the four rightly-guided caliphs Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman and Ali. Above the cartouche, the Bismillah is written in thuluth style. Below, a verse from the Holy Qur'an (68:4) is followed by the last lines of the hadith, a prayer, the names of the artist and two individuals certifying his work, and the date. All calligraphic elements are set against a stippled gold background enhanced with European-style floral elements.
