Collation: 35 V (350), IV(358), 4 V(398), IV+1 (407) ; chiefly quinions ; quire numbering in the form of Hindu-Arabic numerals accompanying an initial kāf appearing in the upper outer corner of the recto of the first leaf of each quire from quire 2 through quire 12 ; catchwords present ; pagination in pencil, Western numerals, supplied during digitization (includes inserts). 1. fol.1a-fol.357b : al-Rubʻ [al-awwal wa-]al-thānī min Tafsīr al-Baghawī. 2. fol.358a-fol.358b : [blank]. 3. fol.359a-fol.405b : al-Juzʼ al-thālith min Maʻālim al-tanzīl fī tafsīr al-Qurʼān. 4. fol.406a-fol.407b : [blank]. Layout: Written in 35 lines per page ; frame-ruled. Script: Naskh ; elegant Turkish or Persian hand ; virtually serifless, but head-serifs appearing irregularly on final alif (left-sloping), lām of definite article, etc. ; mainly closed counters ; some sweeping descenders ; free assimilation of some letters including final alif and following alif or lām, final hāʼ and dāl, etc. Decoration: Simple illuminated headpiece (ʻunwān) on fol.1b (p.2) consisting of scalloped semi-circular piece (dome) in gold, outlined in red and surmounted by vertical stalks (tīgh) in blue ; written area of incipit and facing page bordered in frame with gold band outlined by black, red, and blue fillets ; textual dividers in the form of discs, commas, etc. in red and green ; text rubricated with headings, keywords, overlining, text of Qurʼān being commented upon, etc. in red ; some notabilia (side-heads) and keywords in green. Support: European laid paper in what appears to be several types with spacing of chain lines ranging from 16-20 mm. apart to 27-28 mm. apart and spacing of laid lines ranging from 9 laid lines per cm. to 12 laid lines per cm. ; numerous watermarks including three hats, horn, three circles with initials and cross above, etc. ; various types seem fairly evenly distributed throughout the codex, even within each quire ; crisp and not too thick, though sturdy ; varying from lightly burnished to well-burnished and nearly glossy ; some leaves with a yellowish tint ; some staining and leather burn. Binding: Pasteboards covered in tan brown leather ; Type II binding (with flap) ; board linings and interior of flap in yellow paper ; upper and lower covers bear large, blind-stamped, scalloped mandorla with red-brown leather recessed onlays and gold-painted accents, along with guilloché roll border consisting of a series of s-shaped stamps ; sewn in pink and yellow-brown thread, two stations ; endbands in cream, headband partly gone, only traces of primaries and core remain for tailband ; in poor condition with abrasion, staining, severe lifting and losses of leather at fore-edge flap, upper cover fully detached, delamination of boards, some loose quires, and spine slant (cocked) ; housed in box for protection. Former shelfmark: British Museum, London "No. 27. Maalim al-tanzil." Origin: Lacks dated colophon. Paper and ownership statements suggest late 17th century.
