Notlar Ms. codex. Title supplied by cataloguer. Collation: i, V+1 (11), XI (29), VIII (45), i ; leaves of transcript have been mounted in such a way as to allow space for annotations on facing pages, many of which are thus partially or fully blank ; catchwords present in transcript (as they appeared in the exemplar) ; pagination in pencil, Western numerals, appears only on leaves carrying the transcript. Layout: Transcript written mainly in 17 lines per page ; every other leaf carries a varying number of clarifications or glosses of vocabulary from the Arabic text as well as notes in English. Script: Maghribī script ; crudely executed in pencil in imitation of the exemplar, mainly serifless and rounded with sweeping descenders, spur-like tail on alif of prolongation, slight effect of inclination to the right, etc. (compare transcript of Isl. Ms. 898). Support: European "laid" paper (no watermarks visible) upon which leaves carrying the transcript have been affixed (every other leaf) ; compare Isl. Ms. 898. Binding: Fiber boards covered in shell marbled paper (mainly in brown, blue and dark pink) with dark brown cloth over spine (quarter binding) ; Western style binding ; pastedowns and flyleaves in untinted wove paper ; sewn in heavy cream thread, four stations, over two wide tapes / bands (flexible sewing) ; overall in fair condition with some abrasion, lifting and losses of paper, board and cloth, etc. Former shelfmark: Mich. Isl. Ms. temp. no. 45. Accompanying materials: a. Slip with note "Persian [crossed out] Arabic Manuscripts (Heyworth Dunne?) No Husselman or Meredith-Owen notes" -- b. Slip with note "Counted for 1968/69 Annual Report" -- c. Recycled card with notes in pencil "Maghribi script - N. African script (not incl. Egypt) | same writer as that of the pencilled ms. [i.e. Isl. Ms. 898] | apparently transcribed from anr. ms. (on right) & his notes on how to puzzle it out (on left)" Origin: Lacks dated colophon ; paper, etc. would suggest late 19th century ; bookseller's label suggests terminus ante quem in the range of 1886 to 1916. Shelfmark: Ann Arbor, University of Michigan, Special Collections Research Center, Isl. Ms. 896.
