Script: Naskh ; two elegant 'Syrian' or Egyptian hands ; hand supplying opening two works neat and compact, partially but irregularly seriffed with right-sloping head-serif on various ascenders (even occasional free-standing alif), marked effect of tilt to the left, rounded with curvilinear descenders, somewhat carelessly pointed in strokes or distinct dots, tāʼ marbūṭah very often unpointed, some free assimilation of letters ; hand supplying final work another fine hand, virtually serifless with effect of tilt to the left, curvilinear descenders (some sweeping), pointing in conjoined dots or strokes. Decoration: Keywords and section headings rubricated (or bolded and accented with red ink, as in the opening works) ; textual dividers in the form of red discs and three inverted commas ; written area of final work surrounded by red rule-border. Support: European laid paper of at least two main types ; one type with 10 laid lines per cm. (vertical), chain lines spaced 22 mm. apart (horizontal), and grapes (raisin) under crown watermark (see p.6, 7, etc.) ; another type with 11-12 laid lines per cm. (vertical), chain lines spaced 24-25 mm. apart (horizontal), and watermarks of double-headed eagle (see p.18, 20, 30, 32, etc.) and names (see p.24, 25), dark cream to beige in color, thin though dense and sturdy, well-burnished ; some ink burn. Binding: Pasteboards covered in shell marbled paper (in brown, red, and dark blue) with red leather over spine and fore edge flap ; Type II binding (with flap) ; board linings in untinted wove paper ; sewn in white and dark blue thread, four stations ; worked chevron endbands in cream and dark blue, now quite dingy but in fairly good condition ; overall in somewhat poor condition with abrasion, staining, lifting and losses of paper and leather, minor delamination of boards, etc. Former shelfmark: From inner front cover and spine label, "IL 146" (likely supplied by Yahuda, see acquisitions slip).
