Notlar Ms. codex., Title from inscription on fol.4a (p.7)., Incipit: "الحمد لله الذي قوم قوائد الدين بتأسيس اساس الاسلام وشد واركان ضوابط اليقين باحكام ترصيف معاقد الاحكام ورفع ... وسواه وسدده وقواه اشد تسوية واقوى تقويةبالفيض ", Explicit: "ويقدم على سائر حقوق الغرباء[؟] فضلا عن الوصايا والارث لقوت الاستيلاد", Collation: 3 + II (7), 48 IV (391), IV + 1 (400) ; chiefly quaternions ; fol.4-6 have been bound in prior to the opening folia, immediately apparent from the existing foliation ; foliated in Hindu-Arabic numerals beginning with ١ on the leaf facing the basmalah and ending with ٤٢٥ ; the foliator appears to have repeated fol. 59, repeated fol.167, jumped from fol.169-180, skipped the fol. between fol. 242 and fol.243, jumped from 289 to 300, repeated 306, and jumped from 389 to 400 ; catchwords present ; pagination in pencil, Western numerals, supplied during cataloguing., Layout: Written in 25 lines per page ; frame-ruled., Script: Naskh ; Persian or Transoxanian hand (?) ; alifs are sans serif and taper slightly towards the bottom ; counters are closed ; the lām alif al-mukhaffafah is most commonly used., Decoration: Simple headpiece lightly sketched in red ink at the top of fol. 4b (p.8), consisting of a wide-based triangle sitting atop a three-compartment rectangle, in the middle compartment of which is the basmalah ; texts of fol.4b and 5a are framed in a red rule-border, and the next few folia with a black fillet ; text rubricated with keywords and overlining in red., Support: non-European (likely Persian) laid paper ; chain lines appear sporadically, occsaionally grouped in twos, 11-14 mm. apart ; roughly 9 laid lines per cm. ; paper is not heavily burnished and is fairly translucent ; the codex was seriously damaged by water and mold at some point, causing some loss of text in the final leaves ; the ms. might benefit from having some of the now dry mold removed., Binding: Pasteboards covered in black cloth with black leather over spine (quarter binding) ; Western binding ; board linings in green wove paper ; resewn in white thread ; in good condition., Former shelfmark: From inner front cover and spine label, "IL 181" (likely supplied by Yahuda, see acquisitions slip)., Accompanying materials: a. Inventory cataloguing slip in hand of Winifred Smeaton Thomas. -- b. Acquisitions slip from Yahuda. -- c. Inserted slips on a mix of Oriental and European papers at pp.52, 78 (sewn-in), 96, 128, 228, 470, 522, and 734 ; with the exception of 470-A, which marks the end of the first 'book', and 96-A these slips appear to contain further notes on the text ; some have been sewn in, others tipped in ; none appear to be in the hand of the copyist, although some of the hands are recognizable from the marignalia ; 96-A may be a slip from a bookseller, with inscription mentioning "penal law" ("droit pénal"), the name "M. Talaat" and numbers that could be prices., Origin: Lacks dated colophon ; paper suggests 15th-16th century ; conceivable that this is an autograph of a minor work., Single, many-lobed oval ownership seal impression on fol. 4b (p.8), near the bottom-right corner of the page, "اصفهان" is legible ; filled to superabundance with marginalia in numerous hands, most in various naskhs and some in nastaʻlīq ; most marginal corrections marked with صح ligature seem to be in the copyist's hand ; collation statements seem markedly absent, reinforcing the sense that this may be an autograph work, though they could simply have escaped notice in the sea of marginalia ; glosses are also abundant throughout and marked with assorted abbreviations, some of which presumably refer to hadith authorities ; in some cases references to other texts are identified (see pp.94-95 for examples of attribution to Ibn Ḥajar)., Shelfmark: Ann Arbor, University of Michigan, Special Collections Research Center, Isl. Ms. 584
