Notlar Ms. codex., Title supplied by cataloguer., Incipit: [Tīmūrnāmah-i Hātifī ] "کریمی که تا خوان احسان نهاد بران خوان نهاد آنچه بتوان نهاد ..." ; [Shāhnāmah-i Ismāʻīl] "به هرجا فتد دیده نزدیک و دور تویی کرده اینجا و آنجا ظهور ...", Collation: Original gatherings now extremely difficult to asses due to repairs, but seemingly chiefly quaternions ; appears to lack only one leaf of text at opening ; catchwords present but mainly cut off or obscured by repairs ; pagination in pencil, Western numerals, supplied during cataloguing., Layout: Written in 9 lines per page with written area divided to two columns and as many as 22 lines glossed in the ruled margins ; frame-ruled., Script: Nastaʻlīq (talik) ; elegant hand in a medium line ; characteristically serifless with effect of words descending to baseline, elongation and exaggerated thickness of horizontal strokes, pointing in distinct dots, final and free-standing nūn with point set at opening of wide, slightly angled bowl., Decoration: Opening leaf carries half of double-page illuminated opening with text set off by gold-cloud bands ; written area (included central written area flecked with gold and ruled margins orange flecked) surrounded by frame consisting of a heavy gold band flanked by inner pistachio / turquoise band and outer red-brown and blue fillets ; trianglular fields with floral motifs in orange, lavender, blue, etc. on gold ground accent ruled margins ; simple illuminated headpieces with section headings in white on grounds of gold set off by floral motifs in orange, lavender, blue, and yellow, surrounded by frame of blue with white crosses appear throughout, including in ruled margins ; illustrations include half-page battle scene (p.39), full-page scene on campaign (p. 162), half-page hunting scene (p.268), and another half-page battle scene (p.308)., Support: non-European (likely Persian) laid paper with 6-7 laid lines per cm. (mainly horizontal but occasionally vertical, fairly distinct) and no chain lines plainly visible, formation ranging from clear to cloudy, thin and transluscent though sturdy, medium to dark cream in color ; breakthrough at frames (often repaired), losses and extensive repairs in a variety of papers (mainly European laid) to margins (beyond written area), staining, tears, etc., Binding: Pasteboards covered in light brown leather ; Type III binding (without flap) ; likely two-piece binding (seam of overlapping flanges visible at spine) ; board linings in bright yellow-tinted paper ; upper and lower covers carry stamped, leather inlaid mandorla (further onlay material in green and bronze layered over the leather, filled with symmetrical vegetal composition) and pendants, surrounded by tooled border of ruled lines (forming mitred panel) and s-shaped stamps ; now sewn in white thread, tightly bound ; worked chevron endbands in pink and mint green, good condition ; overall in somewhat poor condition with abrasion, lifting of the inlaid leather, and worn edges., Former shelfmark: "٦٦٨" from spine label., Accompanying materials: a. Slip of paper with descriptive notes in hand of G. Meredith-Owens "361 Tīmūrnāmeh of Hātifī (also called Ẕafernāmeh-i Tīmūrī). A mas̲navī poem on the compaigns of Tīmūr). Copied ca. 1570-80, judging by the miniatures and the style of decoration. Imperfect at the beginning and end." -- b. Folded, torn scrap with list in shikastah-nastaʻlīq (between pp.232-233)., Origin: Lacks dated colophon ; style of illustration and illuminated decoration suggest late 16th century. Conclusion of Shāhnāmah-i Ismāʻīl on p.376 specifies neither copyist nor date of transcription., Former owners' marks on upper board lining ; relatively clean copy though with extensive repairs to outer margins., Shelfmark: Ann Arbor, University of Michigan, Special Collections Research Center, Isl.
