Tarih 18th century (exact date unknown)
Collation: V-1+I (11), 7 V (81) ; nearly entirely quinions, apart from anomalous first quire ; in first quire, first leaf is missing and a single bifolium has been inserted following the second leaf (fol.1a) ; this bifolium carries the incipit page and following ; initial leaf, three leaves between the two works, and final leaf all left blank without loss of text ; catchwords present, more toward the center of the lower margin ; pagination in pencil, Western numerals (supplied during cataloguing)., Layout: Written in 19 lines per page ; single column but with ruled occasional ruled marginalia, including the calculations on fol.67b and fol.68a ; fol.67 (200 x 130 mm.) and fol.68 (190 x 130 mm.) are larger in dimension to accommodate calculations in the margins and have been folded in ; frame-ruled (impression of ruling board evident)., Script: Nastaʻlīq (talik) ; elegant Ottoman hand in a medium line ; characteristically serifless with effect of slight tilt to the right and of words descending to baseline, some sweeping descenders on final ḥāʼ, ʻayn, etc., occasionally hāʼ mudghamah looking like to two inverted commas one atop the other, pointing (for two and three dots) in strokes rather than distinct dots, point of final and free-standing nūn set above or just inside fairly wide, angled bowl ; vocalization supplied a few instances in same color ; entire text of both works appears to be supplied in same hand though line thickness changes., Decoration: Exquisite illuminated headpiece (ʻunwān) on fol.2b consists of rectangular piece surmounted by scalloped w-shaped piece in elaborate frame ; narrow rectangular piece is bordered in frame consisting of blue drops on a field of red framed by gold bands outlined with black fillets ; a long gold-filled yet empty cartouche with light blue outline at ends fills the rectangular piece, and is flanked by piedces of vegetal design in gold on a field of blue ; the scalloped w-shaped piece is framed by an elaborate "well" consisting of a series of decorative bands - dark blue leaves on a field of white and dark blue crosses on a field of lavender separated by bands of gold outlined with black fillets ; the w-piece is filled with a heavy vegetal pattern (arabesque) in gold on gold (defined in black) ; the w-piece is outlined in red, light blue, and gold bands defined by black fillets ; a vegetal pattern in gold on a field of dark blue fills the space between the lower apices of the w-shape ; the w-shaped piece is surmounted by elaborate vertical stalks (tīgh) in black, accented with dots on dark blue, extending from the spandrels of the scallops and points of the w-shape ; very simple illuminated headpiece consisting of rectangular piece with vegetal accents in gold on incipit page of second work (fol.72b) ; decorative frame throughout consisting of gold band flanked by black fillets ; cloud-bands in gold defined by black fillets on fol.2b ; text rubricated with section headings, overlinings, numerals, etc. in red ; pigment and ink (apparently quite acidic) used in the decorative frames, headpiece, cloud bands, etc. has burned through the leaf in many places and care should be taken to avoid further loss of decoration (headpiece on fol.2b) or text., Support: Appears to include both European and non-European paper, early quires seem to include paper of different types ; partial countermark or watermark in front "flyleaf" and fol.10 "WOA" ; partial watermark in fol.11 (horn in shield with trefoil below and "...C. BLAUW") ; mainly leaves of laid paper with laid lines running horizontally spaced roughly 10 laid lines per cm. and chain lines running vertically spaced roughly 24-25 mm. apart (at least four chain lines visible across the page) in the early quires ; some leaves with laid lines running vertically (9-10 laid lines per cm.) also appear in the early quires (see fol. 37, fol.51, etc.) along with some leaves in laid paper with laid lines running horizontally and spaced roughly 8 laid lines per cm. having no plainly visible chain lines ; paper of latter quires appears to be of a different type, with laid lines running horizontally and spaced roughly 8 laid lines per cm., an especially fibrous quality, many inclusions, and no clearly visible chain lines, but it is also difficult to examine due to fragility (pigment break-through at frames has resulted in written area coming detached in most leaves, particularly in the final quire which carries the second work) ; whole fibers seen and some sagging of laid lines throughout., Binding: Very thin pasteboards covered in very dark red-brown leather ; Type III binding (without flap) ; pastedowns (over turn-ins) and hinge in a dull (soiled) cream paper ; upper and lower covers carry central scalloped lozenge motif in gold paint with sprigs in gold paint at the spandrels and apices of the scallops, apparently once filled with a design in gold paint ; also a blind-tooled, gold painted guilloche roll border, defined by painted gold fillets and blind-tooled, gold painted tiny rosette stamps at corners and midpoints of panel border ; covers are slightly small in horizontal dimension ; in relatively good condition with much wear but still whole and well attached., Former shelfmark: From spine label and inscription on interior of upper cover, "IL 24" (likely supplied by Yahuda, compare acquisitions slip)., Accompanying materials: a. Acquisitions slip from Yahuda., Origin: No mention is made of the copyist or date of copying. The date supplied by Yahuda on his slip, "986 ?" [1578 or 79 M], appears entirely unattested in the ms. and is contradicted by the dating of the paper with D & C Blauw papermakers' watermark. Paper, hand, decoration, etc. would suggest 18th century., Conspicuous lack of ownership marks ; some marginal corrections and glosses ; notablila (side heads) throughout first work., Shelfmark: Ann Arbor, University of Michigan, Special Collections Research Center, Isl. Ms. 662
Örnek Metin Fine copy of two works, namely Unmūdhaj al-ʻulūm, al-Ṭarasūsī's handbook of the sciences with definitions and sample questions and answers, and an anonymous short treatise on logic, Risālah fī al-mīzān. Pigment used in the decorative frame surrounding the written area (as well as in headpiece and cloud bands of fol.1b) has resulted in that portion of the leaf breaking away, particularly in the final quire which carries the second work.
