Notlar Ms. codex., Title from inscription on tail edge, back flyleaf, etc., Incipit: "بشنو ای گوش بر فسانه عشق از صریر قلم ترانه عشق ...", Collation: ii, 4 III(24), IV (32), III+2 (40), II+1 (45), IV (53), III (59), IV (67), 3 III(85), IV+1 (94), 5 IV(134), III (140), IV (148), ii ; chiefly ternions and quaternions ; pagination in pencil, Western numerals, supplied during cataloguing., Layout: Written in 12 lines per page with written area divided to two columns ; frame-ruled., Script: Nastaʻlīq ; elegant, delicate hand in medium to narrow line ; characteristically serifless with gentle effect of words descending to baseline, elongation and contrasting thickness of horizontal strokes, pointing in distinct dots, point of final and free-standing nūn set down in bowl, sweeping shaqq (sarʹkash) of kāf often only subtly meeting ascender in a narrow line., Decoration: Splendid illuminated headpiece (ʻunwān / sarlawḥ) at opening on p.2, consisting of large rectangular panel with gold cartouche (text within in white, now effaced) and flanking pieces defined by chī clouds in white and red and surrounded by delicate swirling vegetal decoration in gold with floral accents in yellow, lavender, white, green and red on a lapis lazuli ground, bordered in bands of white, red, turquoise and heavy gold interlace and surmounted by scalloped dome in gold and lapis lazuli with similar floral vegetal decoration and chī clouds in shades of blue ; written area throughout subtly gold-flecked and surrounded by frame consisting of bands of gold, red, and turquoise defined by black fillets ; text of written area occasionally set off by gold cloud bands (incipit and facing page, pp.2-3) or delicate floral designs in gold or lapis (see pp.10-11, etc.) ; section headings chrysographed or in white on a contrasting ground (blue, dark purple, emerald green, gold, red, etc.) ; margins throughout are decorated with fine gold-painted compositions with large floral and vegetal forms (saz leaves, etc.), trees and beasts such as wolves, gazelles, lions, dragons, and monkeys ; otherwise vacant written area on 'title page' (p.1) carries a similarly executed scene with wolf, tree, rocks, plants and clouds ; includes three miniature paintings illustrating the text including a scene depicting a ruler on a dais attended by several individuals standing or seated on a fine carpet (p.35), a scene of a man digging in a fine landscape (p.97) and an erotic scene of two lovers (p.208) ; Priscilla Soucek has suggested that the final miniature "may be Tabriz or Herat" (note on catalog card, 1969)., Support: non-European (likely Persian) laid paper with 7-8 laid lines per cm. (often vertical, indistinct, slightly curving) and irregular chain lines faintly visible (see p.22, etc.), well-burnished, decorated margins tinted pink ; some breakthrough along frames of written area ; endpapers in well-burnished European laid paper ; inner flyleaves (tinted a peach-pink) with watermark of scrollwork (containing three stars above burro) with "G L" below and "LEVERATTO" (compare Heawood no. 3739 appearing in papers dated 1796 and 1810) ; outer flyleaves with watermark of scrollwork with central motif resembling diamond flanked by C's (see outer front flyleaf and compare motif as appears in Heawood no. 3728) with "B P" below and "PICAR[DO]" (see outer front flyleaf)., Binding: Pasteboards covered in painted lacquerwork with brown leather over spine ; Type III binding (without flap), likely two piece binding (seam of overlapping flanges visible at spine) ; doublures fine painted lacquerwork consisting of exquisite floral composition in gold on a red ground with border of repeating floral and vegetal motifs in gold on a black ground ; upper and lower covers carry exquisite paintings of nearly identical composition on a deep red background flecked with glittering strands, namely a central cluster of peonies, poppies, tulips, roses, hydrangeas, etc. with additional buds and floral forms filling the main panel all in shades of pink, light blue, lavender, and white with leaves in various shades of green, and surrounded by a border of lozenges with further realistic floral forms white, yellow, blue, pink, and green on fields of black defined by bands of bronze-gold and repeating vegetal patterns ; sewn in red thread, six stations ; worked chevron endbands in magenta and spring green, good condition (protected by tabs of extended spine leather) ; overall in fair condition with boards severely delaminating, small losses to corner of upper board, some crazing and cracking of lacquer, etc. ; housed in box for protection., Former shelfmark: "195" and "250" inscribed in pencil on recto of front flyleaf ; "195 T. De M.
