The headings are written in gold outlined in black (a few were left out and are replaced in red ink, see fol. 158a). Cream paper, soft, glossy, with laid lines and a few chain lines (in groups of 2 or 3) visible. The text has been collated (see collation statements, e.g. fol. 55a). Upper part of fol. 2a scratched out. Inner margin worm-eaten.Chiefly quinions. Catchword on the verso of each leaf ; some quires are numbered using Arabic ordinals in the form : "Rābiʻah" (fol. 81a).Reading statements in the name of Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad al-Khaṭīb. See mention on fol. 44a: "balagha qirāʾatan fī al-khāmis ʻashar Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad ibn al-Khaṭīb".Waqf (see inscription "waqf" on fol. 2b-3a, upper margin).Decoration: Illuminated title page (ʻunwān) in gold, blue and red (fol. 2a). One rectangular panel with a medallion on the left upper margin. The panel is divided into two uneven parts defined by a border with a chain pattern in gold outlined in black on a red ground. The upper cartouche thus defined bears the title in a stylized "Kufic" script in gold on a blue ground with a rinceau in gold. The lower portion of the panel bears the rest of the title and the statement of responsibility in gold outlined in black in clouds defined in black and filled with red hachures on a ground left plain. The panel and the medallion are outlined in blue with ornaments around the medallion and at each corner of the panel. Very similar to that in Islamic manuscripts, Garrett no. 331B, vol. 23.Origin: The copy is not dated. It appears to be from the 15th century.Incipit: بسم ... وبه ثقني اذا الشمس كورت انكدرت انتثرت وقال الحسن سجرت ذهب ماؤها فلا بقي قطرةExplicit: باب التسليم على الصبيان حدّثنا عليّ بن الجعد اخبرنا شعبة عن سيّار ... وقال كان النبى صلى الله عليه وسلم يفعله - Dark brown leather over paper pasteboards for covers and flap. The upper and lower covers are similarly blind tooled (or gold wanting?). The panel is framed by a large border consisting of fillets and two running patterns on the upper and lower edges, one running pattern on the left and right edges. The central space thus defined has a roundel defined by two fillets and filled with a geometrical pattern, on a ground left plain. The envelope flap has a similar border defining a space which has a central roundel encompassing a smaller roundel itself filled with a geometrical pattern. The smallwer roundel is linked to the first one to the left by fillets. Paper pastedowns (leather on fore-edge flap). - Parts 21 to 25 of the Jāmiʻ al-Ṣaḥīḥ. An inscription on fol. 1a repeats that this is Juzʾ 21.
