Notlar Ms. codex.Physical description: Written diagonally in nastaʻliq script in black or red ink. Opening page is beautifully decorated with a polychrome headpiece. All pages ruled with several lines of gold, red, and blue. - Contemporary morocco, richly gilt, although the cover may not have belonged to this ms. - The ms. is meant to cover 73 maqāms (or makams), meaning the melodic structure of the music piece. However, although the ms. mentions all 73 maqāms, five are left blank. In the beginning of the ms., there is an index with names of the maqāms and the pages they appear on. But the ms. does not exactly follow the index; either the index was written before the ms. or the ms. was rebound incorrectly. Each maqām is divided into three parts: 1. Fasl (or fasıl), i.e. mode. This is usually accompanied with a beste, meaning a certain type of song with a certain poetic structure. 2. Samā'i (or semai), which is usually accompanied by lyrics in the form of murabbaʻ, a poem composed in quatrain. 3. Sharqī (or şarkı), i.e. folk song. The ms. may have belonged to a musician who kept adding to it as he came across these compositions, because many pages are still blank. Unusual and rare.
Edinme Kaynağı Purchase; Worldwide Antiquarian, 2009/6/19 (2009-140).
