Notlar	"874"--Page facing title page. - This study examines in depth two different translations of one of the “best-selling” books in Europe of the period, translated into Ottoman Turkish in the same year. The book Der kleine Volkswirth (The Little Economist), published in 1852 by Otto Hübner, one of the famous popular economists of the 19th century, was one of the first works that influenced the introduction of modern economic thought to the Ottoman geography. The work, which was translated into languages such as French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese and Dutch and printed several times, was translated into Turkish in 1869 by Ahmet Hilmi Efendi under the title İlm-i Tedbîr-i Servet and Mehmet Mithat Bey under the title Fenn-i İdâre. The work, which was prepared in a simple style and in the form of questions and answers in order to teach economic thought to the public in accordance with classical liberalism and especially to be taught as a textbook in schools, can be seen as a product of Hübner’s efforts to raise economic awareness among the masses through popular publications. Indeed, Charles le Hardy de Beaulieu, one of the famous liberal economists of the period who translated the work into French under the title Petit Manuel Populaire d'Économie Politique, made interventions and additions to the text in accordance with the author's purpose; he aimed to spread liberal ideas among the working class with the three new sections he added on some current issues. Ahmet Hilmi Efendi and Mehmet Mithat Bey, who took this "extended translation" published in French as a basis, also added both their own additions and their own styles to their translations; as a result, two different texts emerged. In this respect, the study shows how two translators from similar professions and social classes could translate the same work in different ways in the same period. Mehmet Mithat Bey's translation, in particular, stands out as a product of the Tanzimat generation's effort to write in an understandable style and as one of the early examples of the simplification of the Turkish language.
