Notlar Water colors and ink on paper, in 16 segments, originally mounted on patterned silk material with hand-stitched edges. This map, originally sewn and mounted on patterned silk material, depicts the area around the Bosnian city of Livno, bordering on a narrow strip of Dalmatian coast, at the time belonging to Austria-Hungary. It shows the roads, various borders, mountains, villages, settlements, towns, hans (hostels), fortresses, water supplies etc. The numbers on the side mark the number Christian and Muslim inhabitants in different areas. This borderland between the Ottoman Empire and Austro-Hungary was a troubled area with a large percentage of pro-Austrian Christian inhabitants, which represented a threat to side with Austria in these difficult times, when the Ottoman Empire rule on the Balkans begun to crumble. Already in 1848 Ottoman spies were sent to the area, to observe the Ottoman Croatians communicating with the Austrian Croatians and exchanging ideas about the 1848 revolution. The map is signed under the title with the name of Mahmud Raşid Belgradi, the “former superintendent”.
