Notlar Letter regarding Pelly's need to depart from Baroda for health reasons and Sir Richard Meade being contacted to replace him, as well as requesting that Pelly remain at Baroda until Sir Richard arrives, which will most likely be once the Commission has issued its report and fresh arrangements will need to be undertaken which can be done by a new person. The letter goes on to ask Pelly who he thinks would be best at Baroda once Sir Richard Meade departs as he cannot be asked to stay longer than is necessary, and asking whether Mr (Archibald Hugh?) Hope or James Braithwaite Peile would be suited to it.The letter also asks Pelly's opinions on the real feeling of the peoples in the Gaekwar's territory with regards to the affair, whether their sympathy is real as is being reported in the papers or whether it has been bought, and if it is real does it stem from disloyalty to the British Government or some 'idiosyncrasy of the native mind beyond comprehension'.The letter concludes by asking Pelly to inform Andrew Richard Scoble that he has conducted the case with great ability and good judgement. | 6 folios | more | less
